Why pretend that the cruel jokes and thoughtless comments about your ears don’t bother you? An otoplasty Richmond, VA can bring your ears into beautiful harmony with the natural balance of your facial profile.
We don’t often think about the shape or size of the ears or how they impact our appearance. Yet the emotional trauma caused by years of tasteless jokes, cruel off-hand remarks, and even “helpful hints” about how to cover up those big ears often runs far deeper than is generally realized or appreciated.
Otoplasty is a highly customized surgical procedure designed to alter the size and/or shape of the ears, bringing the ears into correct proportion with the head and restoring the balance and harmony of the facial profile. Altering the shape of the ears requires detailed knowledge of the structural complexity of the ear, as well as the artistic vision to create a pleasing, proportional shape. Dr. Michael Godin, highly-acclaimed double Board certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with a private surgical practice in Richmond, VA, strives to ensure that every otoplasty he performs results in a naturally-beautiful shape that augments each patient’s natural beauty.*
Are You A Candidate for Otoplasty Richmond, VA?
Otoplasty is ideal for anyone who is dissatisfied with the size or shape of their ears due to:
- Overly large ears in proportion to the shape of the head
- Protruding ears (the angle of the ear from the head is greater than 35 degrees)
- Excess cartilage around the outer ear
- Ears that stick out instead of fold in
- Cupped or shelled ears
- Microtia (“small ears”)
- Tumor removal or skin cancer treatment
- Damage from injury or trauma
Otoplasty can be performed on individuals of any age. We often recommend that children have the surgery between the ages of four to six, before teasing and bullying become a serious issue.
Details of the Otoplasty Procedure
For most patients, otoplasty can be performed in our in-office surgical suite under local anesthesia and sedation; however, we prefer that young children undergo the procedure under general anesthesia in an outpatient surgery center. The surgery can usually be completed in about one hour per ear and usually does not involve significant post-operative discomfort. The newly-formed ear shape is held in place with a light dressing to ensure proper healing, and most patients will be asked to wear a headband, especially at night, to maintain the correct ear shape and position until the ear has fully healed.
